Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris born October 20th 1964) is an American lawyer and politician who is the 49th and current vice-president of the United States. Kamala Devi Harris is the first female to be elected vice president, and also holds the title of most powerful female officer in American history. As a member of the Democratic Party, she has previously served as attorney general for California from 2011 until 2017, and also as the state's attorney general from 2011 to 2017 and as a United States senator representing California from 2011 to 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Her career began in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to join the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003 she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. In 2010 Harris was elected Attorney General of California and then re-elected in 2014. Harris was the junior member of the United States Senate from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris beat Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election making her the 2nd African American woman to serve in the Congress, and the first South Asian American American to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she fought for healthcare reform and federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a path to citizenship for immigrants who are not legal and the DREAM Act, a ban of assault weapons and progressive tax reform. Her sharp questioning of Trump officials during Senate hearings has garnered her national attention, which included the second Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, who was charged with sexual assault.
